Sports Contracts are Ridiculous

By: Giselle Castro

There are multiple sports that offer an insane amount of money to players that are better than the average player in their respective leagues. The MLB, NBA, and NFL are the leagues that offer the largest contracts to their players.

For example, these past few months the Los Angeles Dodgers have spent over $1.1 billion dollars on baseball stars such as Shohei Ohtanit that signed for $ 700 million dollars for the next few years. They also signed a Japanese pitcher by the name of Yamamoto Yoshinobu for $325,000,000 million dollars for the next 12 years. The Kansas City Royals signed their young star Bobby Witt. Jr for $288 million dollars for the next 12 years.

Another star signed in Kansas City was the QB for the Chiefs, Patrick Mahomes. In 2020, the Chiefs signed Mahomes to a 10 year, $450 million dollars and he was earning more money in a week than some jobs do in a year. Joe Burrow, Bengals QB, signed a $275,000,000 dollar contract. If anybody had the option to take this money, they would. Players have described other athletes' contracts as mind blowing and astonishing.

In the NBA, Jaylen Brown, which is not a very good player or the best player on his team, signed a five year deal for $303 million dollars with a guaranteed $65 million dollars in 2028. The hometown Nikola Jokic has a $275 million dollar deal. Again, just an absurd amount of money.

There are many other players that have absurd contracts, and they aren’t even the biggest contracts on the team or in the league. And some of these contracts are worth more than some of the best players in the former decades. Some think these guys make to much money, do you think some of these guys make to much money?
