Brighton High School’s Speech and Debate team has been to two tournaments this year. One novice and one varsity tournament, both at Cherry Creek High School.
Novice meets go by quicker than varsity meets. Novice meets only have three rounds. Depending on the event a competitor is participating in, they might have to go against the same people all three rounds due to how small these meets are. Varsity meets also have three rounds, but competitors who make it to finals have to go compete in a fourth round. Varsity has enough people competing that a person does not go against the exact same people every time.
Tournaments start around 7 AM, but novice meets end earlier than varsity meets. The tournament the team went to this year ended around 4 PM. Varsity meets last a lot longer. Awards for this varsity tournament were scheduled to start around 7 PM, but they always run later than the scheduled time. Novice meets also have awards given out, but they never have a finals round.
There is a huge time difference between rounds at novice and varsity meets. At novice meets, there is usually an hour gap, give or take, before a person heads to their next round. At the most recent varsity meet the team went to, the gap in between rounds was around 2-three hours.
Varsity and novice tournaments are really not that different in the end! The team is still accepting members up until January. If anyone is interested in joining, they should just go for it. It helps students learn to speak in front of a group of people, and it looks great on a resume!
